FLOWING INTO POSSIBILITY

Today’s Prayer to Passage will be from the book ‘Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us’ by Daniel H. Pink.

Today I pray, “Dear God, It is so energizing to stand on our marks of a new year. A revitalizing promise of possibility calls us forth to new heights, raising our delights to lengthened hope, vision, and opportunity. What drives You in Your love for us? And what is possible for us, humanity, this year? Amen.”

Following my prayer, I held the closed book in my hands and opened it to this passage:

“One source of frustration in the workplace is the frequent mismatch between what people must do and what
people can do. When what they must do exceeds their capabilities, the result is anxiety. When what they must do falls short of their capabilities, the result is boredom. But when the match is just right, the results can be glorious. This is the essence of flow.”
—DANIEL H. PINK

Artists know this. Fate is a promise not so distant, as we may hope when everything around us shouts bravery from rooftops, yet we recognize a world filled with peasants in the streets. Our good promises carry us to the highest peaks — where the air is thinner and snow, as bright as the sun. We work in harmony with our forerunners. They knew the essence of flow and many times achieved this. But we must also yield the harvest of our labor in the present. And know of such a harvest. Breaking bread reminds us of our capabilities. And saying grace defines its worthy essence.
