Today’s Prayer to Passage will be from the book ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Brontë.
Today I pray, “Dear God, Tell us a poem about women. Amen.”
Following my prayer, I held the closed book in my hands and opened it to this passage:
“My help had been needed and claimed; I had given it: I was pleased to have done something: trivial, transitory though the deed was, it was yet an active thing, and I was weary of an existence all passive.”
—CHARLOTTE BRONTË
Perhaps She feels this way sometimes, too. The passivity can create a weariness. Yet this is only because full self-expression feels so energizing. And guilt for full self-expression is a tiring interruption. Peacefulness can well be full self-expression. And peace often shows up when women take the lead as women, not as men. And communication, open dialogue, and feminine diplomacy. All good things, hopefully far exceeding something transitory.
