Today’s Prayer to Passage will be from the book ‘Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need A Green Revolution — And How It Can Renew America’ by Thomas L. Friedman.
Today I pray, “Dear God, Your world is a beautiful world. Renewal is upon us, a growing conversation. For this, I am grateful. Children and advanced adults have been calling for this renewal for quite many years. What is a simple reminder of the urgent call to care for our earth as a gift to the children of children in lifetimes following our departure? Amen.”
Following my prayer, I held the closed book in my hands and opened it to this passage:
“But I believe that all that could change with the right leadership local, state, and federal properly framing how much we have to gain by rising to this moment and how much we have to lose by failing to do so.”
—THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
I only have one invention idea at this time. There was a time in my life when I invented a concept of the modern digital camera and autostereoscopic (“glasses-free”) 3-D television, but those were really bad ideas — who would ever buy a digital camera? Only kidding; other fortunate people had the calling to bring similar ideas to life. Now, my one current invention idea is something that would solve the following problem: Harmful waste in our lands, rivers, lakes, oceans… All of the garbage.
On average, I fill one 13-gallon garbage bag, sometimes two, per week. Just me. I will quickly qualify that statistic by adding that I also fill two 13-gallon bags of recyclables, which are recycled, per week. It almost sounds criminal, however, capitalism is in no rush to mandate our product consumption. My invention is a grand scale idea. It’s inspired and daring. It would change the planet for the better. No more garbage in our earth. But big ideas like mine take big powers to actualize them. And this does not happen often enough.
My idea feels so right that my soul feels cleaner thinking about it. Can you imagine a world where there are no landfills? And the oceans are freed from their inherited floating islands of trash? And children grow up knowing this kind of earth? This is the stuff inventions are made of. And my goal is to rise to this moment.
